North Haven - The best option
The Business Case for the proposed North Haven unitary authority is available in the Business Case section of this website.
The independent Boundary Committee for England has published new proposals for patterns of unitary local government in Suffolk.
They remain:
- A two-unitary council model consisting of an Ipswich and Felixstowe unitary authority, ‘North Haven’ (lead authority Ipswich Borough Council) and a Suffolk Rural authority (lead authority Suffolk County Council)
- A single unitary Suffolk council
However, the Boundary Committee has said it prefers the single Suffolk option. The Secretary of State must now decide what action to take. There are basically four options:
- Single Suffolk unitary council
- North Haven and Rural Suffolk unitaries
- A stand-alone Ipswich unitary council
- Keep the status quo
Before the Secretary of State takes his statutory decisions, further representations are invited from the public. These representations can be made about either the Boundary Committee's alternative proposals or the original proposals. They should be made between 8th December to 19th January 2010.

Ipswich Borough Council believes the two-council option would provide strong and effective strategic leadership, empower communities, deliver value for money services and be affordable.
